Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Pescadero, California

High above a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean is Pigeon Point Lighthouse. It was exciting arriving during a period when flowers blanketed the hillsides. Imagine how treacherous it was for mariners traveling at night in these rocky coastal waters. I can still feel the cold wind whipping up from below the cliffs, when I view this photo.

Boulders on Northern California Coast

The fog had lifted somewhat and patches of blue started to appear. Pretty normal summer weather along the California Coast. We manage to make it up along the coast each year, typically in the summer, when weather in Phoenix is blistering hot. It’s a great change and one of the best places for coastal photography with coves, cliffs, mountainous regions and of course fog!

A Glimmer of Sunset in Alaska

Quiz:

The TravelBugster is out traveling on “The Romantic Road” this week. Anyone want to guess where in the world this is? Leave a comment and let me know if you can guess it? No Google, No cheating!

Daily Photo:

It had been cloudy, and the expectation of a sunset were pretty slim. But I waited, talking to a couple sitting on the cold, windy deck, trying to stay warm under some blankets from their room. As I was adjusting my camera for the sunset, right in front of me, in the water, a whale came up and spouted his spray, which reached all the way up to the deck I was on. I yelled to the couple, come check out the whale, but as quickly as it came, it was gone. I had a great view of it, but the couple didn’t. You can’t plan for these things, but it doesn’t hurt to be at the right place at the right time, at least waiting for something to happen. In my case a fleeting sunset. It wasn’t much, but it turned out to be an event worth going out for.

Sea Weed Garden in Ireland

Daily Photo:

The tide had just gone out and I was sloshing through the sea weed covered jagged rocks, slipping and sliding, looking for the best spot to catch my 1st Ireland sunset. It was a challenge getting out to a good spot knowing what I had to do to get there, but it was an entirely different challenge trying to figure out how to navigate my way back out, once it got dark. The whole area was riddled with crevasses that went deep and if you fell into one, there was no one around to help you get out, and of course the returning tide would have the last word. It was scary to say the least. But, I got some dramatic sunsets that Ireland is famous for! I guess that made it worth it!

Moon Over The Gold Nugget, Shell Beach, California

Daily Photo:

The golden hues of the sunset on this giant rock or “Sea Stack” of sorts, kind of reminded me of a huge “gold nugget”. I wander if there is one, somewhere buried deep in the earth, waiting to be found. One gold piece that size would make you rich as Bill Gates. I digress.

This beautiful beach we stayed at this summer, is called Shell Beach, which is just north of the infamous party beach-Pismo Beach. We were there a few days before July 4th celebrations and from our room high on the cliffs of Shell Beach, we could watch the R.V’s and campers clamouring through the sand dunes, looking to find a place on the beach to celebrate the 4th. Pismo Beach is one of the few beaches I know of, where you can drive right down on the beach and set up camp. Pretty cool idea.

In 1971, while stationed at Vandenburg Air Base, I had the rare opportunity on Pismo Beach, to see the┬ábioluminescence of phytoplankton, light up the waves and our footprints as we walked. I have never seen it since. I have heard, the Island of Viques, off Puerto Rico, has seen these little “light up in the dark fish”.

Puna Coast at Sunset, Big Island, Hawaii

Daily Photo:

Volcanic rock seashores on the leeward side of the Big Island of Hawaii are rugged and hard to maneuver when you’re carrying a tripod and photo gear. One fall and you’re pretty busted up, especially wearing sandals. But the beauty pulls you in, and all you can think about is finding a scenic vantage point and then wait for the right moment to capture this memorable place. When you’re there, you never want to leave. When you’re gone, all you think about, is when can I come back.

The Love Of Italy- Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre

Daily Photo:

Riomaggiore is one of 5 Cinque Terre cliff towns located on the Ligurian Sea in Italy. I had spent the day scoping out possible evening shot locations and grabbed this one mid-day while a storm was brewing. I believe Cinque Terre is one of the most exciting places to come in Italy. It’s got a lot to offer everyone. Easy train stops at each town, great restaurants, great hiking, water activities, you name it. I spoke to many Americans who come to this area and spend a week just hiking along the Ligurian cliffs between each of the villages. Great part they say is, anytime you want to stop, just go into the next village and catch the train that seems to run evey 20 minutes. We spent 3 days here and it definitely wasn’t enough time.

Pua Mana Beach Front-Lahaina, Maui

Daily Photo:

This area of Lahaina was perfect for beach shots. The palm trees swung out toward the ocean, so it was easy to frame a good picture. I learned of the world renowned Australian photographer Peter Lik while visiting Lahaina. He has a Photo Gallery in downtown Lahaina and it’s quite impressive. I was inspired by his landscape photography some years ago and still try to figure out some of his techniques. He’s worth the visit. http://www.lik.com

Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy-Overlook

Daily Photo:

I would have to say that Vernazza, Italy is probably on the top of the list for photographic vistas anywhere in the world. To climb up the steep cobblestone pathways to your own little spot, before the crowds show up at sunset, and to share that spot with a dozen other photographers is quite intoxicating. People around you from all parts of the world converging on this famous cliff-side town, all wanting the same thing..a moment frozen in time to hold onto for a lifetime. I happen to be standing next to a commissioned photographer from Japan who had a dream job. He travelled the world testing new cameras for Sony, Canon and Nikon and got paid for it. Who wouldn’t want to do that. This guy was pulling out cameras like a gunfighter pulling a pistol out of a holster. It was quite exciting to watch him juggle between shots knowing he only had a few minutes with the golden sunset.

Icicle Plants on Shell Beach, California

Daily Photo:

There was an art show going on at the park in Shell Beach and I broke away and went over to the cliffs to check out the view. Didn’t have to wander far to find a great shot on the edge of the cliffs. Shell Beach is located just north of Pismo Beach on the way to San Luis Obispo, California. Spent 4 days there this past June. Weather was fabulous. Party animals were gearing up for 4th of July a few days after we left. I headed to Pittsburgh for the 4th to visit family. They do fireworks up right. Sit in my brothers front yard and fireworks explode overhead. Can’t beat that.
