Midnight Lamplights of Venice

Great time to be out on the streets of Venice is when everybody else isn’t. This obvious requires one to be out late. During the day, you can hardly see the ground for people. They are everywhere, even during times of so called off season, which is when we normally go. It still has it’s magic, inspite of all that, and highly recommended as a major stop if you visit Europe.

Yellow Boat in Burano, Italy

Just a short boat ride from Venice is a small colorful island community of Burano. Famous for lace, it offers the traveler a rainbow of colors to enjoy, as each home is painted in individually, distinctive colors. Each time we visit Venice, we make plans to stop over in Burano for some serious photography. Venice is great, but quaint Burano has a personality all it’s own. Walk the canal streets, relax at an outside restaurant, take in the locals, admire the rows of homes and gift shops across the island.. and don’t forget your camera.

Bustling City on Water- Venice, Italy

As anyone who has followed my blog knows, Venice is my favorite city. It has a long history for me, being that I lived close by for a few years in my life. With every return, it’s fun to rediscover. I met my wife outside of Venice and we had the opportunity to go on dates along the canals, enjoy the restaurants, meander through the narrow passageways, go shopping and otherwise get lost in it’s rich history. As I have learned, one never grows tired of Venice, if you reach out with your eyes, ears and thoughts and feel it’s pressence all around you.

Quiet Morning in Venice

Daily Photo:

Nothing like a crisp clear morning in Venenzia! Wandering around the walkways and canals, looking for a small outdoor cafe or bakery to sit and relax and enjoy the quiet. Mm.. quiet, Venice is not! How nice that would be, but the canals are typically bustling with activity, people going to work, boats bringing in supplies, kids off to school, saws and hammers pounding away. You have to dig deeper into the backstreets and corridors to find some possible quiet. It’s there somewhere, and it’s nice when you find it! For an impatient photographer looking for the next award winning shot, you don’t sit still long. Of the zillions of photographs taken of Venice, you think you’re going to get that exceptional fine art shot. One can only hope, but in the end, it’s really more about the experience of being there and enjoying the moment..and sharing!

Canals of Burano, Italy

Daily Photo:

A short distance by water taxi or water bus from Venice is a cute small island called Burano. Every home is painted a different color. Like Venice canals weave through the town from every direction with many bridge crossings. This island is definitely a tourist destination with shops and restaurants up and down the cobblestone walkways and corridors. As a photographer your camera never stops clicking as the “photo ops” simply unfold in front of you.

Morning in Venice

Daily Photo:

You won’t get there without climbing a bridge.  All points anywhere in Venice require crossing over canals and canals and canals. The colors this morning in Venice were very vibrant. Almost storybook when you add some HDR effect. Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers following my blog!!

San Giorgio Basilica, Venice

Sundays in Venice:

I remember sundays being a day to visit Venice and go shopping. Sometimes just for a few hours. Sometimes making a day of it. Today I was reminiscing of the great memories I’ve had there and felt like posting Venice.

Daily Photo:

This recent photo is the first time we’ve been to Venice that the San Giorgio Basilica is not covered with scaffolding. Always a great spot for a sunset of this tiny island. Walking the palisade at night like so many have since the 8th century, you can’t help but feel part of a great history that has originated from here. Replace the cruiseships with sailing vessels and let the winds carry you back to a simpler time or to the late Victorian age, at the turn of the century. When I romantize about Venice of the past, it’s the Victorian era that captures me.

Venice-Tranquility Zone

Daily Photo:

In Venice..Everyone loves balconies and everyone loves flowers hanging from trellis and window boxes. As a tourist and photographer, you can’t wait to get around the next corner to see what’s there. You’re always in hopes of finding that picture-perfect combination of canal, balconies, flowers, water and sky, all coming together like a Renaissance painting. Ah, it’s there and with HDR photography the possibilities of bringing your imagination along for the ride into surrealism becomes all to real. This photo plays in my memories of so many trips to Venice and why I always want to keep returning. In the coming months I’ll be bringing you to Venice, as I have seen it. Trattoria Sempione Venice

Daily Photo:

This beautiful little fish restaurant is located near the center of Venice in between Rialto and San Marco. As you’re walking the main route between Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square you come upon this bridge that crosses the network of canals that maze throughout Venice. We always stop at this location on our many visits to Venice. It’s one the most picturesque restaurants on the canal, always covered with vines and flowers. The night before as we were walking the streets of Venice it started pouring down rain and we ran for cover and just happen to show up here.  Next day, came back to take this shot.

Venice: Beyond Gondolas & Pigeons

Daily Photo: Surreal Venice!

I never grow tired of Venice. I can remember as a young photo enthusiast taking many trips on the train from Aviano Air Force Base in Italy down to Venice to spend the evenings trying to capture the sunsets over the hazy Grand Canal. Everyone wants to go to Venice to pay a singing Gondelier to navigate the narrow and noisy canals and waterways in a private Gondola and knock another destination off their bucket list.

The pigeons in St Mark’s Square will be glad to eat out of your hand, on your head or anywhere else you place a morsel of food  Something you would never consider doing in New York City or anywhere else. In fact in our hometown we will go as far as hiring a pigeon removal company to get them away from our homestead. So why the intrigue?

Venice is a special place. The dark and musty maze of canals, bridges and walkways seems to whisper it’s long and tumultuous history.. slow down and listen!

Venice cannot be absorbed or felt in merely a weekend stop-over. It’s not in the tourist menus at the endless rows of restaurants or the myriad of souvenir shops along the way. Watch the locals at work, at lunch, at play to understand the real Venice..never rushed absorbing life one small step at a time. Watch them at the markets, at the lesser travelled corridors along the way to gain an appreciation for the real Venice. Sit on a bench, enjoy a gelato and then enjoy another! Venetians are great at being Venetians.

Meld become Venetian. Experience Venice away from the hustle and bustle of mainstream thoroughfares. Get off the beaten path and trod Venice like a Venetian.. and snap away!
