Yellow Boat in Burano, Italy

Just a short boat ride from Venice is a small colorful island community of Burano. Famous for lace, it offers the traveler a rainbow of colors to enjoy, as each home is painted in individually, distinctive colors. Each time we visit Venice, we make plans to stop over in Burano for some serious photography. Venice is great, but quaint Burano has a personality all it’s own. Walk the canal streets, relax at an outside restaurant, take in the locals, admire the rows of homes and gift shops across the island.. and don’t forget your camera.

Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe

A short distance out of South Lake Tahoe, California, we discovered Fallen Leaf Lake quite by accident. It was one of those,”let’s just get off the main road and head for the back country”. We never know where we’re going to end up. Sometimes you hit a gem like this spot. There were homes and cabins along the lake shore and eventually we came upon a marina and restaurant at the south end. Nice find off the beaten path. This perspective shot, was right up the dock looking north.

Enjoying the Calm of Boothbay Harbor

I don’t know. With all the crazy weather and so many folks struggling to get back to normal in the Northeast, I just had to go through my arsenal of photos and find a more peaceful time when I was there. One early summer evening in Maine, when I was sitting on the harbor in Boothbay, enjoying the stillness of the unseasonably cool night, I took this photo. It’s nothing special. I just remember the peace I found just sitting there alone. I was actually freezing, while people back home in Phoenix, were unseasonable hot, smelting in the desert. A few days later in Maine it became unseasonably hot in the 90’s. We decided to cut our trip short because it became too hot in Maine. A 105 degrees in Phoenix feels better than 90 degrees in Maine. Go figure!

Most of us just want things to be normal. I wish for folks that our struggling with the cold and their losses, will soon find their normal again. Things always come back around. I guess that’s hard to believe when you’re sitting in the midst of a crisis. But it will happen.. in time!

Grand Canal of Venice, Italy

I don’t think I’ll ever grow tired of visiting Venice. It has a history for me, for close by is where I met my wife. Venice became I place where we spent our days walking and talking and looking toward the future and all the great things we were going to do. In those days, it was like going to the mall; shopping, eating, and cruising on the canal. Well, I guess you can’t do that at a mall, so that makes Venice a step up from the mall. Like most places, pictures are great, but you have to experience it, up-close, in person, to really catch the magnitude of just about any place.

We just returned from “The Romantic Road”, in Germany where we spent a week touring castles, medieval towns, magical countrysides, the alps, and snow and autumn blending into a picture-perfect backdrop to a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I’ll be bringing you more photos in the weeks and months to come.

Just Another Day in Paradise, Az

Daily Photo:

It’s hard to believe this is the desert around Phoeniz, Az. It was just one of those days when the air was exceptionally clean, and rare “puffy” clouds were floating through Phoenix. I grabbed the camera, got on the bicycle, and headed out into the neighborhood. We live in a lake community, so great “photo ops” are not far away. Most people hate the heat of summer here, and I’m no different. I plan alot of road trips in the summer, to cooler climates.. But, after the summer heat breaks, everyday for the next 8 months becomes, “just another day in paradise”!

Quiet Morning in Venice

Daily Photo:

Nothing like a crisp clear morning in Venenzia! Wandering around the walkways and canals, looking for a small outdoor cafe or bakery to sit and relax and enjoy the quiet. Mm.. quiet, Venice is not! How nice that would be, but the canals are typically bustling with activity, people going to work, boats bringing in supplies, kids off to school, saws and hammers pounding away. You have to dig deeper into the backstreets and corridors to find some possible quiet. It’s there somewhere, and it’s nice when you find it! For an impatient photographer looking for the next award winning shot, you don’t sit still long. Of the zillions of photographs taken of Venice, you think you’re going to get that exceptional fine art shot. One can only hope, but in the end, it’s really more about the experience of being there and enjoying the moment..and sharing!

Canals of Burano, Italy

Daily Photo:

A short distance by water taxi or water bus from Venice is a cute small island called Burano. Every home is painted a different color. Like Venice canals weave through the town from every direction with many bridge crossings. This island is definitely a tourist destination with shops and restaurants up and down the cobblestone walkways and corridors. As a photographer your camera never stops clicking as the “photo ops” simply unfold in front of you.

Green Lake, Whistler, Canada

Daily Photo:

You never know quite what I’m going to put up next. I don’t know myself. I guess it keeps things interesting.  A very scenic drive out of Vancouver heading north will take you to Whistler, well known for the Winter Olympics, back a few years ago. We’ve taken this drive a number of times in the fall and the weather is normally pretty good. We happen to catch some great weather for this photo, and a nice shot of a couple in a canoe returning from a ride on the Green Lake, just outside of Whistler.

Morning in Venice

Daily Photo:

You won’t get there without climbing a bridge.  All points anywhere in Venice require crossing over canals and canals and canals. The colors this morning in Venice were very vibrant. Almost storybook when you add some HDR effect. Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers following my blog!!

Wailua River, Kauai, Hawaii

I had heard that shark travel up this river in Kauai once in a while and people have been attacked. So kayaking for me was out. I thought maybe skydiving might be safer. I then decided photographing from the shore was maybe safer, and so, this picture was a result of all that analysis.

Many films since the fifties have been filmed on or around the Wailua river, including Blue Hawaii, “The Lost World”-Jurassic Park, “Outbreak” and more recently the real life story of the girl who lost her arm to a shark attack-“Soul Surfer”. A scene from the movie was filmed just upstream from this location with Carrie Underwood.

The Wailua River winds through several ecosystems.  From forested river banks and tall cliffs to lush green rain forest as you wind upriver.
