Walking Bridge in Yosemite Valley, California

Surrounded by towering mountains, the Merced River meanders through Yosemite Valley. I could spend days here just wandering along the river banks, enjoying the cool breezes, wild life and grassy fields that make up the valley. This walking bridge made a good photographic spot along the trail. I had to wait for a family that was forever enjoying the water under the bridge. I remained patient and they finally moved on.

Full Moon at Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park

A planned trip to Yosemite during Full Moon paid off this past September. The haze from forest fires lingering on the horizon. It was a beautiful calm night from Glacier Point, looking east across Grizzly Point. As it got dark, hikers coming down from Vernal Falls looked like lightning bugs scattered across the trails.

Sentinel Dome,Yosemite National Park

A nice vigorous mile hike to get to the top of Sentinel Dome to catch the sunset light of this 8,122 ft high hill. From this high point you can see 360 degrees around all of Yosemite. Quite invigorating and worth the trip.

Daily Photo:

This photo was taken atop of Sentinel Dome looking west, with 3 photos of different exposure, than sent through Photomatix and Photoshop CS5 and Topaz for post-processing.

Getting Tunnel Vision at Tunnel View in Yosemite

Daily Photo:

As you’re coming in from the south on State Route 41, you pass through this mile long tunnel that opens up to the Yosemite Valley. You can’t help but pull off and take in the vistas of El Capitan, Half Moon and Bridalveil Falls. I spent a few hours at sunset shooting the changing light from a thunderhead that was breaking up to show a full moon. As the crowds disappeared and I was there alone, I decided to turn my camera to the tunnel, setup for a long exposure, to catch the red, white and orange beams of light from a few cars passing through the tunnel. They probably thought I was a little crazy, hugging the road in darkness.

Half Moon Sunset, Yosemite National Park

Daily Photo:

Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park, is a great spot for photographing the high sierras with the big half rock or known as “Half Moon” in the foreground. I decided to give the photograph an aged flair, of what it might look like after sitting in a lost box of photos taken back in the 30 or 40’s. I occasionally get request to fix old photos of the past with the red pigment showing all that’s remaining.

Reflections of El Capitan, Yosemite National Park, Ca

Daily Photo:

It was one of those, “I wonder if I can get the whole thing in the picture” moments. El Capitan was huge in front of me as I searched for a possible spot to catch a mirror image in the stream. The other challenge was I knew I had to be on a bit higher ground for the reflection in the water to line up correct. I saw an embankment further down the stream with still water in front of it and thought it might work, so I headed for it. Got up on top of the ledge and, wallah, it was a perfect spot. With my wide angle lens stretched out to the max I framed up the perfect picture reflection of El Capitan. As a landscape photographer, you get excited when it all comes together. I used a 16-35mm canon lens to capture this shot. Three images were taken and then merged into Photomatix, then post-processed in Topaz and CS5.

Full Moon over Yosemite Valley

Daily Photo:

Just got back from a 3 day trip to Yosemite National Park, California.  Been quite a while since my last visit, so it was time to return. I picked a great time to go with the full moon dominating the evening sky, but picked a bad time for catching the Yosemite Falls, which was dry at this time of year. I like shooting at twilight and/or the “golden hour”. It was interesting my 1st day reaching this point at a vista above Yosemite Valley. The skies started out quite gray with a huge thunderhead over the Sierras, with no prospect of an exciting colorful sunset, as most of the 20 or so photographers, who were lined up, were murmuring. I knew the full moon was buried under those clouds somewhere and just maybe it would all break loose and shine through. The photographers seemed to be all on the same frequency, all packed it in and left except for me and another guy. Within 30 minutes the sky opened up and the moon shined through, along with remnants of red hues from a setting sun. Like a fishermen waiting patiently for a bite on his line, the fish took the bait and it was time to reel ’em in, and we reeled in some good shots..worthy of the wait. So a message to you photographers about the “golden hour”, don’t leave too soon..wait!!

This photo was taken with 3 exposures, run through Photomatix, Topaz and Photoshop CS5 in post processing. Long exposures were in order, as it was quite past twilight.
