Oh Romeo..Oh Romeo! Venice, Italy

I’m always impressed by how pretty balconies, windows and doors are in Venice. They sure make a statement. I could probably spend the whole day doing nothing but photographing windows, doors and balconies around Venice and Burano.

I did a video not long ago using Venice as a backdrop to a song by Michael Buble called “Home”. Those brave enough to click on the” link” below, can have a taste of me singing around Venice. Let me know if you would like me to post others I have done, or stick to photography, or both. You won’t hurt my feelings.!i=755213640&k=5XcHQmG

Yellow Boat in Burano, Italy

I was taking my chances of ending up in the “drink” in Burano with this photo. You can see by the photo, that I leaned way to far over the water, to get the boat as much in the photo as I could. Any farther and I was in the canal. It’s kind of crazy when I look back, expensive camera and all, would never survive the splash. No one ever said photographers weren’t a little crazy. But, I got the shot!

Midnight Lamplights of Venice

Great time to be out on the streets of Venice is when everybody else isn’t. This obvious requires one to be out late. During the day, you can hardly see the ground for people. They are everywhere, even during times of so called off season, which is when we normally go. It still has it’s magic, inspite of all that, and highly recommended as a major stop if you visit Europe.

Bustling City on Water- Venice, Italy

As anyone who has followed my blog knows, Venice is my favorite city. It has a long history for me, being that I lived close by for a few years in my life. With every return, it’s fun to rediscover. I met my wife outside of Venice and we had the opportunity to go on dates along the canals, enjoy the restaurants, meander through the narrow passageways, go shopping and otherwise get lost in it’s rich history. As I have learned, one never grows tired of Venice, if you reach out with your eyes, ears and thoughts and feel it’s pressence all around you.

Grand Canal of Venice, Italy

I don’t think I’ll ever grow tired of visiting Venice. It has a history for me, for close by is where I met my wife. Venice became I place where we spent our days walking and talking and looking toward the future and all the great things we were going to do. In those days, it was like going to the mall; shopping, eating, and cruising on the canal. Well, I guess you can’t do that at a mall, so that makes Venice a step up from the mall. Like most places, pictures are great, but you have to experience it, up-close, in person, to really catch the magnitude of just about any place.

We just returned from “The Romantic Road”, in Germany where we spent a week touring castles, medieval towns, magical countrysides, the alps, and snow and autumn blending into a picture-perfect backdrop to a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I’ll be bringing you more photos in the weeks and months to come.

Quiet Morning in Venice

Daily Photo:

Nothing like a crisp clear morning in Venenzia! Wandering around the walkways and canals, looking for a small outdoor cafe or bakery to sit and relax and enjoy the quiet. Mm.. quiet, Venice is not! How nice that would be, but the canals are typically bustling with activity, people going to work, boats bringing in supplies, kids off to school, saws and hammers pounding away. You have to dig deeper into the backstreets and corridors to find some possible quiet. It’s there somewhere, and it’s nice when you find it! For an impatient photographer looking for the next award winning shot, you don’t sit still long. Of the zillions of photographs taken of Venice, you think you’re going to get that exceptional fine art shot. One can only hope, but in the end, it’s really more about the experience of being there and enjoying the moment..and sharing!

Timeless Venice

The corridors of Venice are like a big maze. If it weren’t  for the signs saying either Rialto Bridge or St Marco Piazza, you would be completely lost. But half of the fun in Venice is to lose yourself to the back streets and get a glimpse of everyday living of Venetians. So it’s hard to do with all the tourist but fun just the same. I have 40 years of remembering Venice with many trips back and it always feels good to me with new places to explore. I’ll never grow tired of my favorite city.

Hanging Out to Dry, Venice

In Venice, it’s pretty common on the back streets to see folks hanging it all out to dry; work clothes, underwear, lingerie. On a pulley system, the rope rolls it in and rolls it out. I think at home if you let your under garments hang out to dry, for all to see, you might get arrested, or at least laughed at. Makes for an interesting shot. Lacking the space, all things modern haven’t quite hit the back streets of Venice. Still one of my favorites places to go.

Canals of Burano, Italy

Daily Photo:

A short distance by water taxi or water bus from Venice is a cute small island called Burano. Every home is painted a different color. Like Venice canals weave through the town from every direction with many bridge crossings. This island is definitely a tourist destination with shops and restaurants up and down the cobblestone walkways and corridors. As a photographer your camera never stops clicking as the “photo ops” simply unfold in front of you.

Court Yard at Hotel Al Codega, Venice

If I was looking for this place, I probably would have never found it. Each time we visit Venice, our goal is to try to get lost in the deep dark corridors and back alleys and walkways, just to see where we end up. You can’t get to lost because Venice is pretty much like an island. Sooner or later you come out somewhere near the train station or the Rialto Bridge or San Marcos Square. This 4 star cottage hotel had one of the most colorful little courtyards. Geraniums were everywhere. Good thing I took a picture of the sign!
