A Rare Snowy Superstition Mountains

There I was, minding my own business when a friend of mine called and said,” You have to come out here right away and photograph the most incredible sight you’re ever going to see. It’s snowing on the cactus in my backyard”! Well he lives right at the foothills of the Superstition Mountains. His backyard¬† edges to the preserve. I grabbed my gear and jumped in my car and drove east, watching the snow melting and disappearing, right before my eyes. I got there soon enough to catch a few melting cactus plants with the snowy mountains in the background. This is indeed a rare sight for us desert rats and we get a little crazy when it snows. This may well be our last winter storm. Let’s hope not, cause we can use the moisture.

Towering Plateaus in the forefront of Snow-capped La Sal Mountains in Utah

Leaving Arches National Park heading for Grand Junction, Colorado I spotted these towering plateaus, and just had to stop and grab a photo. They’re so majestic, I decided to wander out into the high desert pasture to grab a quick shot. I noticed some bulls off to the left of me, so I knew I shouldn’t wander to far away from the safety of the barbed wire fence. After a stare-down and nostrils flaring, that was my cue to get out of there.

Half Moon Sunset, Yosemite National Park

Daily Photo:

Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park, is a great spot for photographing the high sierras with the big half rock or known as “Half Moon” in the foreground. I decided to give the photograph an aged flair, of what it might look like after sitting in a lost box of photos taken back in the 30 or 40’s. I occasionally get request to fix old photos of the past with the red pigment showing all that’s remaining.

Mesa Arch in Canyonlands

Daily Photo:

I sometimes try to scope out an area that I want to photograph a sunrise, the day before, to know where the “sweet spot” will be. In this case I took the hike down to Mesa Arch right before sunset to guess where the sun would rise the next day. The orange glow of the sun was coming in nicely, so I grabbed a few shots through the arch with the snow-capped La Sal mountains in the distance. With my tripod just a few feet from the edge of a 1000 foot vertical drop, keeps you on your toes and ready for any unsuspecting wind gust. After photographing here, I hiked quickly back out to catch the sunset at Green River Overlook a few miles away. Those I’ll show another time. Check out my gallery above for all my daily photos.

Aspen Grove-Colorado National Park

Daily Photo:

Going west out of Estes Park you run into Colorado National Park. There are so many photo “ops”, it seemed like we were stopping all the time. Our goal was to reach Winter Park by sun down, but not before we trodded through grassy Aspen groves, climbed up to rocky waterfalls, enjoyed herds of elk, wandered aimlessly through bog fields, and breathed the thin wind struck air at the 10,000 foot summit over Milner Pass. Aspen trees with their distinctive white bark created a pleasant contrast to the pine tree forest that dominated the scenery.

Blackwater Falls-West Virgina

Daily Photo:

This is my 2nd trip to Blackwater Falls. I came a few years ago in the autumn but got down to the falls a bit to late in the evening to capture the light, so I vowed to come back. I have visited many falls across the United States but something magical catches you here in Tucker County in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virgina. Maybe it’s just a special feeling of growing up in the hills in southern Pennsylvania not far from here. Or maybe, it’s the fact that this waterfalls is just downright “perty”! “Country road, take me home, to a place, I belong, West Virginia..” John Denver must have felt it too. The off-color hues come from tannic acid which in part is how it got it’s name. The mist spraying on you, the shear power you feel from the roar, something worth the hike down to see this wonderful most photographed spot in all of West Virgina.

“Fingers From Heaven”- Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia

Daily Photo:

As we were leaving Blackwater Falls, West Virgina high in the Allegheny Mountains in central eastern part of the state, this vista opened up between the trees.¬† Most of the area was covered over with vegetation, so you couldn’t peer out over the edge to see the mountains.¬† I knew I didn’t have much time, so I pulled off the road and started looking for an opening. I set the tripod up in this narrow opening overlooking the mountains to capture “heaven’s light” shining through the clouds for a very brief moment. The perfect light never waits and you just have to be lucky enough and in the right place to grab the moment. Blackwater Falls I’ll save for tomorrow.
