Dining Room, Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

The green just kind of overwhelms you, walking into this dining room. The hotel has a policy, if you want to explore the hotel, you pay a fee of $15.00 and you can roam, take pictures, enjoy a visit and check out photos of the movies that were filmed on location at the hotel. I thought it was worth it, not to be bugged for having a tripod and larger camera. They take it in stride and it really is a “Grand Hotel” to visit. Staying there was kind of out of the budget. Photographers never sit still long enough to enjoy these kind of places.

Mackinac Bridge from Mackinac Island, Michigan

Every evening tourist flock to the west shore to watch the sunset over Mackinac Bridge to the west. Lake Huron stretches out like an ocean, so big you can’t see to the other side. Imagine in the winter, when all tourist have left, this lake turns to ice. For locals, it connects the mainland to the island, and snowmobiles take to the water, or should I say ice, and the boats are dry docked. After Christmas, they line up all the Christmas trees, across the lake as guiding post for the snowmobiles to follow. Pretty clever! I guess the big question each year is; “who is the brave one to test the ice first”. If you’re wrong, goodbye snowmobile and maybe goodbye you!

This photo was taken in mid September this year. We like to visit areas past tourist season. Rooms are easy to find and at a great price. We stayed in a beautiful B&B, we called the day of arrival and got it for $85.00 per night. Not a bad price and the place was fabulous.

The Gardens at Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island

Hard to tell it’s raining as I make an attempt to photograph this beautiful fountain and grounds at the Grand Hotel. Folks who know the movie, “Somewhere in Time”, will recognize the scenery where part of the movie was filmed. We spent quite a bit of time, shooting the hotel and grounds, taking a horse and buggy ride around the area and enjoying one of the most beautiful islands anywhere. Probably the most enjoyable part of the trip was bicycling around the 7 mile perimeter of the island. Everyone would gather to catch the sunset on the beach in the evening, looking across Lake Huron toward the Mackinac Bridge to the west. Great times!

Rocky Shores of Lake Huron, Michigan

On our trip to Mackinac Island we followed the west shoreline of Lake Huron for just this reason, to hopefully catch stretches of shoreline that were pristine and endless. This golden shore accented by the setting sun and a little photoshop magic helped set the mood I was hoping for.

Novel Phone Booth at Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

You don’t see these very often anymore, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing. What Super Storm Sandy showed, was cell phone service gets knocked out with everything else during power outages. A few phone booths may have saved the day for many people lost without power and communication. And maybe these nostalgic looking English-style booths kinda “perty-up” the neighborhood. Just saying..

Daily Photo:

This little red phone booth sits on the grounds of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. It seemed to be summoning me..Phone Home..Phone Home! But I didn’t go in for fear that the ghost of Clark Kent would show up and need it to change into Superman. It’s possible! Christopher Reeves did do a film here called, “Somewhere in Time”.¬† It’s a stretch..HaHa!

Cheboygan Crib Light, Michigan

Daily Photo:

Not sure what the “crib” means, but it looks like a lighthouse to me. Got off the main highway and kind of stumbled across this lighthouse while looking for a rest room. We were on our way up to Mackinac Island, taking the backroads, and I guess, you never know what’s up around the next bend, and that makes it’s a whole lot of fun, just exploring.

I’m one who likes photographing “leading lines.” Wouldn’t it be cool, if the sidewalk could have been made to line up with the lighthouse. I guess the designers didn’t check with me or other photographers before building this off center sidewalk and rail!

The Jockey Club at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Daily Photo:

For $10.00 you can tour the grounds and the iconic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. I guess it’s their way of controlling the tourist. I look like a tourist¬† loaded down with photo gear. Quite out of place for a fancy hotel with well-dressed patrons, but hey, I paid my $10.00 and that gave me right-of-way to look completely out of place and photograph anything I wanted, and I did! Though some gave us dirty looks, we were on a mission to explore this fabulous hotel made famous by the movie, “Somewhere in Time”. On the grounds in front of the Grand Hotel is the Jockey Club. It didn’t appear open for business, which for my benefit created a nice photo without distraction.

Sunset at Lake Huron, Michigan

Daily Photo:

On the way up to Mackinac Island, we followed the east coast of Lake Huron. I figured there would be opportunities to catch the lake when conditions seemed right and there were. I’ve spent alot of time photographing oceans and never spent much time on the Great Lakes. When you’re there it feels alot like being on an ocean and that is what I was hoping for. This photo was taken with 3 photos merged into Photomatix and then post processed in Photoshop CS5.

HDR-Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Daily Photo:

This classic hotel was built in 1887 on Mackinac Island, just east of Mackinaw City on Lake Huron, Michigan. Everyone who visits wants to relive the famous 1980 movie, “Somewhere in Time”, starring Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. With sprawling Verandas and scenic overlooks across Lake Huron, fountains and gardens, a little romance of yesteryear is in the air. Some dramatic clouds rolled in making an HDR photo so much the better.
