St. Malo’s Chapel Near Estes Park

Daily Photo:

A short drive out of Estes Park, Colorado on S. Highway 7, you come across this beautiful church sitting on a big rock. A reflective pond sprawls out in front of you and the Colorado Rocky Mountains finish off the background. What more could you ask for, for a picture-perfect moment. The clouds were dramatic and the sun was beginning to set. This was such a pictuesque spot that we had to come back the next day and get a different perspective. Those photos I will share another time.

Alien Landing

Daily Photo:

Driving along the Oregon coast  to say the least is very scenic, but coming upon what appeared to be an alien launching pad was not what we expected. The fog was rising and the tide was coming in, so we parked and hastily went down the bluff to investigate. Someone not long before we arrived had scraped this art into the sand with what appeared to be a big rake. We tried not to disturb it and started shooting. The tide was coming in fast and in short order, the “alien landing pad” began to melt into the Pacific Ocean with each new wave. Aliens..mm, well it sounds cool. What really!? We were left to wonder.

Trattoria Sempione Venice

Daily Photo:

This beautiful little fish restaurant is located near the center of Venice in between Rialto and San Marco. As you’re walking the main route between Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square you come upon this bridge that crosses the network of canals that maze throughout Venice. We always stop at this location on our many visits to Venice. It’s one the most picturesque restaurants on the canal, always covered with vines and flowers. The night before as we were walking the streets of Venice it started pouring down rain and we ran for cover and just happen to show up here.  Next day, came back to take this shot.

Acropolis-Pillars of Might

Daily Photo:

Probably not the best of times to be hanging out in Athens, Greece. It was hot and sticky with alot of demonstrations and unrest going on. We found it best to stay low key and visit the major tourist routes. The Acropolis of Athens being one such place was heavy with tourist. So trying to get a decent photo of a spot that has seen a billion photographs was not easy.  Working around groups of tourist took a bit of patients but I guess sooner or later you find your shot. All of Athens as far as you can see, primarily of white structures, sprawl out from atop this ancient citadel.

Cliffs of Moher-Ireland

Daily Photo:

The Cliffs of Moher are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Claire, Ireland. They rise 390 ft above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag’s Head, and reach their maximum height of 702 ft. just north of O’Brien’s Point, 6.5 miles to the north. As sure as there is sunshine in Arizona, the rain was a falling in Ireland. The wind that climbed up over the precipous of the cliffs was enough to knock you over. Not the best scenario for HDR photography which requires everything to be pretty well, “still”. You’re awestruck standing on the edge of these vertical cliffs looking over the vast Atantic Ocean, eastward toward North America, so very far away. The effervescent greens take your breath away, something Ireland is very well known for. Over a million people a year come to enjoy this very spot and marvel at nature’s work of art.

HDR photography tidbit: HDR is a challenge if anything is moving. If you can’t get your surroundings to stand still, go ahead and use your best exposed photo and just run it through “tonemapping” in Photomatix. If you have raw files, you could make a copy of your best exposed photo and increase 1 or 2 stops in either direction and then merge those photos in Photomatix. If you have alot of problems with noise, I highly recommend Topaz Adjustment.

Venice: Beyond Gondolas & Pigeons

Daily Photo: Surreal Venice!

I never grow tired of Venice. I can remember as a young photo enthusiast taking many trips on the train from Aviano Air Force Base in Italy down to Venice to spend the evenings trying to capture the sunsets over the hazy Grand Canal. Everyone wants to go to Venice to pay a singing Gondelier to navigate the narrow and noisy canals and waterways in a private Gondola and knock another destination off their bucket list.

The pigeons in St Mark’s Square will be glad to eat out of your hand, on your head or anywhere else you place a morsel of food  Something you would never consider doing in New York City or anywhere else. In fact in our hometown we will go as far as hiring a pigeon removal company to get them away from our homestead. So why the intrigue?

Venice is a special place. The dark and musty maze of canals, bridges and walkways seems to whisper it’s long and tumultuous history.. slow down and listen!

Venice cannot be absorbed or felt in merely a weekend stop-over. It’s not in the tourist menus at the endless rows of restaurants or the myriad of souvenir shops along the way. Watch the locals at work, at lunch, at play to understand the real Venice..never rushed absorbing life one small step at a time. Watch them at the markets, at the lesser travelled corridors along the way to gain an appreciation for the real Venice. Sit on a bench, enjoy a gelato and then enjoy another! Venetians are great at being Venetians.

Meld become Venetian. Experience Venice away from the hustle and bustle of mainstream thoroughfares. Get off the beaten path and trod Venice like a Venetian.. and snap away!

Vernazza Vista

Daily Photo:

In northern Italy near Genoa lies a rocky coast along the Ligurian Sea called Cinque Terre. Five cliff towns hover in pastel colors along it’s rocky shores, beckoning hikers and tourist from around the world.  A train connects each town making it easily accessible by most travellers. This area is a photographer’s heaven with ever-changing hues of light to enjoy that once in a lifetime shot. Sunsets are spectacular. Find yourself a vantage point and shoot away as the town of Vernazza unfolds it’s incredible vibrant color display.

A River Runs Through It

Daily Photo:

Hi I’m Dave Morgan “The Travel Bugster”, on a world trekk to find the most beautiful places to photograph in (HDR) aka “High Dynamic Range” photography. Follow me as I attempt to bring you a daily photo of exciting places to visit and also show you basic HDR techniques I used along the way. One of the fun things I love to do is fly to a city, rent a car and head for the back roads in search of beautiful vistas to photograph. This photo  “A River Runs Through It” was taken in Montana heading south toward Yellowstone National Park.
